I recently had an unfortunate experience at the Armenian Consulate in Venice after losing my Australian and Armenian passports, along with other important documents and my SIM card. As a dual citizen, I sought assistance from the consulate, hoping to receive guidance and support during this distressing situation. However, my experience left me deeply disappointed.

The female assistant I interacted with was not outright rude, but her attitude lacked the empathy and understanding one would expect in such a situation. Since I was not returning to Armenia but to Australia, she seemed to dismiss my concerns rather quickly. Given that pickpocketing is a well-known issue in Venice, I am certain the consulate encounters many individuals facing similar predicaments. Yet, instead of offering structured and practical guidance, I felt brushed off.

One major issue was the lack of proactive assistance. While I am young, mobile, and had some financial means to navigate the situation, I couldn’t help but think of how much more difficult this experience would have been for someone older or more vulnerable—like my mother. The consulate should ensure that those on the frontline display more empathy and are well-equipped to handle such emergencies.

Moreover, the advice I was given was unhelpful and impractical. The assistant instructed me to purchase a SIM card, yet failed to mention that a passport is required for such a purchase. This resulted in wasted time and added frustration, as I went to the designated location only to be turned away due to my lack of identification. As someone working in a consular role, she should have been aware of this requirement and provided a more viable solution.

Finding the consulate itself was a challenge, and when I finally arrived, I felt like I had to drag information out of the staff rather than being offered clear, comprehensive guidance. Whether I was returning to Armenia or Australia should not have affected the level of support I received. The role of a consulate is to assist its citizens, regardless of their onward travel plans.

My hope in writing this review is to bring these concerns to the consulate’s attention so that future individuals—especially those who are more vulnerable or face additional barriers—receive the assistance they need. It would be beneficial for the consulate to develop a structured response package outlining clear steps to take in such situations. A proactive, supportive approach could make a significant difference for those experiencing distress while far from home.

I left the consulate with tears in my eyes and frustration in my heart. The lack of empathy and practical support was disheartening, and I strongly urge the consulate to train its staff to handle these situations with more compassion and efficiency.
